Pillsbury Castle is ASID Design Home 2024 in Minneapolis

Pillsbury Castle owners Matthew Trettel and Ryan Hanson have always had a love for homes with a story and were immediately drawn to the craftsmanship and artistry present in Alfred F. Pillsbury’s Tudor Revival home. They learned that the collection of mansions once owned by Minneapolis’ elite of the early 1900s, including the Pillsbury family, were mostly torn down or converted to commercial use. The couple made it their mission to preserve the house as it was intended by Alfred and Eleanor Pillsbury – to be a home for friends and family to gather.

Both Trettel and Hanson are entrepreneurs with a penchant for aesthetics and storytelling and when the opportunity arose to collaborate with the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) and the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI), their combined expertise and vision enabled a unique restoration concept and a design-driven reinterpretation of the home as a showhouse – with a twist..

Their appreciation for history, architecture, and community building led them to a collaboration that would allow the public to see inside an important property built for one of the people who put Minneapolis on the map. Trettel and Hanson tell KBB, “We wanted a unique home in which to raise a family. Matthew had had his eye on the Alfred Pillsbury mansion as it had been on the market for a number of years. Around the time we bought the home, the ASID Design Home had been on hiatus for seven years, and a great house was needed to revive the program. Our professions in marketing and events were ideally suited to bring this to life. And better yet, it was the perfect tie to Minneapolis’ past in an effort to shine a bright light on Minneapolis’ future.”

Unique to this showcase house is the fact that each room is being designed to cohesively result in a final home for the couple, as they will be fully moving into the property after the show.
