Remarkable Renovation

As part of a whole-house renovation of a 6,000 sq.ft. residence on Long Island, NY, the team at New York City-based Studio RB worked to update the style and function of the kitchen and bathrooms while tailoring the design to accommodate a family of five.

Designer Gal Vaknin-Raz created a layout and renderings of the desired look and feel before beginning the search for a kitchen vendor. She said, “We worked closely with the client on the renovation, down to the smallest details, using a detailed questionnaire to understand their lifestyle in the kitchen and the individual preferences of each family member. The kids were involved as well – we spoke with them about how they use the kitchen and what matters to them.”

A Renovation Based on Reason

Removing a load-bearing wall reinforced the connection between the kitchen, den and dining room and opening views through the house. It modestly increased the footprint of the kitchen from 25 x 12 to 27 x 15.

The mom and kids love to bake, so it was important to make room for that passion in the design. The original kitchen didn’t allow for everything the clients envisioned, but by designing an elongated, slightly narrow island, Studio RB was able to incorporate ample cabinetry dedicated to baking equipment and tools.

The family also values spending time together while cooking and eating, so a breakfast seating area at 30-inch height within the kitchen was a must-have for them.

Respecting the clients’ request for a natural, light color scheme, Vaknin-Raz worked to create a modern aesthetic without the use of black or dark gray materials. “We used a neutral color palette consistent with the rest of the home, combining Bondi Frosty White in a super matte lacquer with Synthia Highland Oak, all brought together with Taj Mahal quartzite.”
