Emma Winchester, designer with deVOL Kitchens, touched several spaces in her work on a Victorian home: the kitchen, sun room, boot room and, up a winding stairway, a bathroom in the eaves.
For the bath, the clients wanted a timeless space. Winchester’s aesthetic choices were guided by the homeowners’ eclectic taste and their extensive collection of antiques and artwork. The color palette for the bath leaned on hues seen throughout the rest of the home: greens, reds and warm, earthy browns.
The design of the vanity was inspired by vintage furniture and ornate old shop counters. The central portion of the double-sink unit is flanked by shallow extensions of the Carrara marble top. Open shelves on the ends of the cabinet provide extra storage; the client opted to cover these with curtains “to hide everything away and introduce a textile element,” said the designer. Drawers surround a tip-out laundry hamper in the center of the cabinet.
The aged-copper tub is the focal point of the bathroom, its polished rim and interior catching sunlight and bouncing it through the space. Period-style fittings – including a wall-mount tub filler with a ceramic-handled hand shower – complete the Victorian look. Wood trim, framed artworks, accent lighting and wallpaper activate the exceedingly tall walls of the 14 1/2 ft. x 8 ft. room.
