Why Interior Designers Should Embrace Construction Management

Published: January 2, 2025

On our most recent From the Tap podcast, we spoke to Renée Biery of Delaware-based deVignier Design. She specializes in large-scale construction, including new builds and renovations, and we discussed why interior designers should include construction management in their list of specialties.

In her experience, Biery says interior designers are not often part of construction projects, as they are not always intentionally seeking those out. Sometimes they are included in this part of the project because clients run into issues with the contractor, etc., so makes sense for designers to be paid for this service and to market it as one of their skills.

“Construction management offers long-term financial benefits, while decorating is often viewed as a non-essential luxury,” said Biery. “Homeowners also see construction projects like kitchens and baths as investments in their home’s value.”

The designer also advised how she has created a recession-capable business by balancing her design and construction projects.

Boosting Profitability

Biery says being involved in construction management allows for the potential for a flat-fee structure and reducing hourly billable constraints. It also makes her a one-stop shop, and her clients trust her to be able to manage any type of project.

“Being involved in construction management positions me as the trusted advisor throughout the entire home improvement process,” she added.

Biery also talked about being able to add markups to your fees and explained why some designers are nervous about this and why they should not be.

Skill Set

To be successful at construction management, Biery says you need to have a full understanding of construction timelines and managing subcontractors. Accurate budgeting, scheduling and project oversight helps avoid delays and extra costs. She also says strong communication skills help align with contractors and clients.

Biery also talked about how designers can get into this area of the business and provided some helpful tips. She says not to force it, though, if you do not enjoy it. Lastly, she shared some common mistakes designers make when approaching construction projects and how to avoid those.
