Looking for inspiration for reworking the interior of their Hartland, Wisc. getaway, the homeowners turned to Pinterest. Once they found a photo that resonated with their vision for a moody and modern kitchen, they reached out to Carmel Builders (now known as Alair Homes Milwaukee) to realize it. As the house would eventually become a destination for family parties and get-togethers, they wanted a flowing, open floor plan that would take full advantage of the lakeside views and light. The builders brought designer Denise Merbeth into the project as a kitchen and bath specialist.
The existing kitchen was boxed off to the right of the entrance and was accessed via a narrow opening near the front door. This partial wall made the space feel confining and isolated. The countertops, appliances and cabinets all contributed to its dated appearance.
The clients were looking for an open-concept kitchen with a contemporary yet warm character. Removing the small wall that demarcated the kitchen solved the spatial issue and introduced another source of daylight to the interior. Custom cabinets with crisp detailing are solidly on trend. A black and white palette, accented by natural wood floating shelves, adds drama. Painting the original sloping, beamed ceiling also gives an edge to the space. Paneling the appliances maintains the color treatment throughout the room.
