The clients were in New York, the designer was based in Atlanta and the job site – a spec home that was in foundation – was in Boca Raton. Throw in more than a few pandemic-induced supply chain issues, and you’ve got a complex, even intimidating design project. But Jeremy Jones, founder of Jones Design Associates, was undeterred; with a background in luxury design for hospitality projects around the globe, he and his team were up for the challenges.
Luxury Design From a Distance
While Jones prefers in-person meetings – “You can read facial expressions and assess more rapidly how you’re doing,” he says – Zoom calls with the clients and construction team worked well. Once commercial flights resumed post-Covid, it was easy to hop on a plane for project check-ins, allowing the designers to approve finishes and coordinate with everyone as normal.
Teams Work
By the time Jones took on the project, the builder had already selected or completed many basic features of the home. In order to give the homeowners what they wanted, the design team had to modify and revise many details, large and small, and communicate them to the subcontractors. To expedite the change orders, they relied on the GC’s leverage with suppliers.
“I’ve learned in luxury hotel design that you should design to the capability of the construction team. You can have the most amazing details in the world, but if they can’t be well executed, then you may need to simplify your details to achieve the best result. In this case we’d partnered with our team on another project with beautiful results. Working in tandem with a builder like Compson, and specifically our team, Val, John, and Marissa, instilled that confidence to deliver a more challenging design because we could be confident in the quality of the result,” said Jones.
Expanding Experience
“I’ve always prided myself on pushing for something different with each new project whenever possible. But honestly, I’m a bit of a control freak (as are most of us in this industry). This project, at the time it was executed, and with this client whose design sensibilities lean more on the wild side, got me to loosen up aesthetically, and put more faith in my personal instincts.”
