Set in the landmark Cathedral District in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, this Queen Anne-style home was designed by Wallace L. Dowell and built as “The Carpenter House” in 1891. More than 130 years later, it was time to refit the historic kitchen for a modern lifestyle.
Designer Carissa Trygstad of Showplace Cabinetry Design Center was referred to the homeowners by Ryan Knutson with Boulevard Construction, which was the builder on this project. It was a fortuitous move. “Ryan’s attention to detail really allowed me to be creative, while also using the architecture of the home as a heavy influence. I love a remodel, and this was a great example of what can be done when the remodeler also wants the end result to be a showstopper,” said the designer.
The clients originally wanted to cut the kitchen into two separate rooms, with a butler’s pantry off the dining room. After Trygstad presented them with several iterations, they agreed that the overall layout benefited by keeping the space wide open, while creating functional zones within the space without adding walls. “It really came down to having space for an island or a butler’s pantry,” said Trygstad. “”Once the homeowners let me keep the space as one large room, it really allowed more layout design creativity.”
The original kitchen was 10’ x 17’ with 8′ soffits. The designer merged the 14’ x 13’ breakfast area with the existing kitchen space and carved out the dropped ceiling, allowing the new cabinets to rise to 9’6” tall.
The ceiling now boasts a 15” deep coffer. Its orientation was guided by a load-bearing beam, which defined the placement of the central piece. Individual coffers branch off of that element, and are configured with the location of the new island and focal cabinets in mind.
