Marco Lavit has designed Eclipse for Carpet Edition, a new collection of rugs whose concept was inspired by the massive motion of celestial bodies and the vast movement of the human imagination.
The eclipse, a phenomenon so distant yet which has permeated cultures going back to the most ancient civilizations, still sparks questions and generates awareness. It is a concrete testimonial to the huge systems that occur above us, and is motivation to constantly push forward to understand or even to imagine what enigmas may reside outside of our knowledge. At its core the eclipse is this — something concealed to be revealed, one celestial body that covers another and by doing so manifests their movements and orbits.
In the Eclipse Collection, Lavit has created an evocative installation able to express all of this with efficiency and simple elegance. Elementary forms are born from the juxtaposition of different shades of one color or from the contrast of opposing tones, the alternation of different weaves and pile heights, cut pile or bouclé, with the complicity that light play creates on it, giving depth to the two-dimensional geometry.
The collection is developed on three variants of the same theme; three different frames capture the same moment. Eclipse 0.1 is a full-scale scene of two celestial bodies that come together as two overlapping circles. In Eclipse 0.2, the shot tightens and the two circles become semicircles, giving the scene new meaning by adding new and unedited input for our own interpretation. Eclipse 0.3 zooms in further on the point where the boundaries of two systems overlap.
The rugs are available in three sizes and in as many color variations — Total Blue inspired by the night sky, Partial Ice recalls the placid gray of the moon’s surface and Annular White with its dark blue on a milky white background. Eclipse depicts a journey towards the eclipse without ever being able to reach it, floating in space of our imagination.
