When Technology Makes Sense: A Conversation on Purposeful Innovation at KBIS 2025

Published: November 14, 2025

The KBIS session “When Technology Makes Sense,” moderated by Apartment Therapy’s executive home director, Danielle Blundell, brought together a panel of experts to discuss how purposeful tech is reshaping both the design process and the client experience. Joining Blundell on stage were Anthony Patrick, director of product management for JennAir, along with design-build team Danielle and Michael Gutelli of Clark & Aldine.

Blundell opened the conversation by asking how each panelist defines technology in their daily work. For the Gutellis, whose team stays intentionally small, technology is less about gadgets and more about efficiency. They explained that digital tools – from project-management platforms to AI-assisted writing – allow them to streamline timelines, support their crew and maintain clear communication across projects. By letting technology handle repetitive or time-consuming tasks, they’re able to devote more attention to creativity, client needs and quality craftsmanship.

Patrick offered a product-development perspective, noting that JennAir relies heavily on data-driven insights to determine how people actually use their kitchens. He explained that the brand collects extensive consumer input and uses technology to analyze behavioral patterns that influence appliance design. This process helps JennAir innovate with purpose, focusing on features that truly enhance cooking, cooling and cleaning rather than adding complexity.

The panel then turned to how technology is integrated into the home. The Gutellis said they are seeing increased client interest in induction cooking, smart lighting and connected plumbing features – all of which can elevate everyday living when implemented thoughtfully. Still, they emphasized that not every project requires high-tech solutions; the key is identifying what will serve the homeowner’s lifestyle rather than overwhelming them with options.

Sustainability also played a central role in the discussion. Patrick highlighted JennAir’s advancements in materials and energy efficiency, including developments designed to reduce environmental impact without compromising performance. These innovations, he said, reflect a broader shift toward technology that supports long-term resource stewardship.

Throughout the session, the message remained clear: Meaningful innovation is intentional. Whether guiding internal workflows, informing product design or enhancing the home, the best technology is the kind that simplifies, supports and ultimately improves the human experience.
