Leading an All-Female Design Studio

Published: December 4, 2024

In our latest KBB From the Tap podcast, we speak with Stephanie Wiott, founder of Stephanie Wiott Designs, about leading an all-female design studio.

Our talk begins with Stephanie recapping how she got her start in the design field. Still an interior design student, she worked a part-time stint at a Home Depot, where, after a brief turn in the wallpaper and window treatment department, she was transferred to the kitchen & bath section. As part of her training, the store sent her to NKBA classes – and her career direction was set.

She shares the process of relocating from Chicago to Indiana, where she opened her own firm and began the staffing process. Invited to do a Parade of Homes interior by a local builder elevated her profile in her new location. College students approached her looking for internships, and that became a useful pipeline for finding new talent.

After taking listeners through the rewards of running an all-female design firm, the conversation focuses on a challenge: empowering women to deal with the unwarranted self-doubt that defines “imposter syndrome.”

The conversation wraps up with Stephanie sharing her woman-to-woman advice for newcomers to the interior design business.
