Sherwin-Williams Consumer Brands Group Releases Fall 2026 Trend Report

Published: September 9, 2026

As life moves back indoors this fall, consumers are making room for activities that help them disconnect from screens and reconnect with one another. Game nights, music, hobbies, casual meals and small celebrations are influencing how rooms are arranged, how surfaces are used and which objects earn a place in the home.

The Sherwin-Williams Trendsight Team’s seasonal research identifies a return to tangible, in-person experiences, temporary breaks from connected technology and the celebration of smaller everyday “minorstones.” The shift suggests that homeowners are not simply changing how their spaces look. They are creating rooms that make it easier to gather, play, make and be present.

Decor Trend Watch: A Fresh Take on the Familiar

Consumers are embracing the familiarity, comfort and optimism associated with earlier eras, but its fall expression is not a literal recreation of the past. Familiar rituals and retro references are being remixed to make today’s homes feel more social, playful and personal.

The look is analog without feeling outdated, nostalgic without becoming themed and expressive without requiring a full-room transformation. It comes to life through activity-centered spaces, accessible objects, bold forms and finish combinations that invite interaction.

Bringing the Fall Reconnect Home

The idea of The Fall Reconnect comes to life through spaces that give people a reason to gather. Think defined activity zones for games, music or reading; shared work areas that support hands-on activities; and open shelving and decor that invite participation. The emphasis is less on creating a perfectly styled room and more on making everyday spaces feel ready to be used and enjoyed together.

This Fall’s Signature Design Moments

Playful Contrast: Familiar Forms, Unexpected Finishes Krylon

Krylon brings the “A Fresh Take on the Familiar” trend to smaller projects that can make a room feel more social, optimistic and personal. A game caddy, lamp base, side table, frame, serving tray or organizer can become a cue that the space is meant to be used.

The strongest expression comes through contrast. Soft satin and matte finishes can sit beside high-gloss or reflective metallic accents, giving retro-inspired forms a more current point of view.

Fall Color & Finish Lens

Color supports the idea of The Fall Reconnect rather than defining it. Krylon shades Satin Meringue, Satin Beach Glass and Matte Vintage Rose bring a softer, familiar quality to fall projects, while Satin Spring Grass, Gloss Pumpkin Orange and Original Chrome introduce more expressive contrast. Together, these colors and finishes reflect the trend’s mix of optimism, nostalgia and playful personality without recreating the past.

The approach is especially effective on smaller, contained projects such as game-room storage, table accessories, lamps, frames, serving pieces and furniture details.

Rooms With a Reason: Defined, Welcoming, Ready to Use

Dutch Boy Paints

The idea of The Fall Reconnect begins with rooms organized around real-life activity. Dutch Boy Paints can help define a game corner, listening area, reading nook or hobby zone without requiring a complete room makeover.

The focus is not on a single named color, but on creating a backdrop that helps an underused area feel intentional, inviting and connected to the household routine.

Everyday Anchors: Spaces That Support Routine

Minwax

Back-to-school season brings a return to routines and renewed attention to the spaces that help make everyday life work. Entryways, mudrooms and other transition spaces can become practical anchors for those routines, giving backpacks, shoes and everyday essentials a designated place while keeping the home ready for what comes next.

Flexible elements like benches, hooks and open storage make these spaces easy to adapt as needs change.  Minwax wood stain and finishing products help bring out the natural character of these hardworking wood surfaces, adding warmth and a tactile quality to functional spaces designed for everyday use.

The Porch Pause: Connection at the Threshold

Cabot

Fall connection does not have to begin inside. Porches, decks, steps and exterior wood seating can support the brief, informal moments that define the season: morning coffee, a conversation after school, a game-day meetup or an evening outside before the weather turns.

Cabot exterior wood care helps protect and enhance these spaces, so they remain ready for use as the social threshold of the home.

Hands-On by Design: The Process Becomes Part of the Trend

Purdy

As making and doing gain renewed appeal, the act of completing a project becomes part of The Fall Reconnect. Painting a small activity zone, storage piece, trim feature or furniture detail provides a tangible break from passive scrolling and a visible sense of progress.

Purdy tools support the hands-on side of the trend by helping homeowners approach focused projects with greater control and intention.
