Designed by Gumdesign for Antoniolupi, Tramediterra combines the natural solidity of a stone basin with a base crafted from stoneware using a 3D printing process. Two materials, two manufacturing processes and two distinct design languages come together in a dialogue that enhances the character of each.
Carved from natural stone, the basin expresses the density, depth and timeless appeal of the material. The base, by contrast, is created through an additive manufacturing process: layer by layer, the stoneware is deposited through 3D printing until the volume gradually takes shape. The fine horizontal stratifications that remain visible are not a decorative treatment but the direct expression of the manufacturing process itself, transformed into a defining aesthetic feature.
The relationship between these two surfaces lies at the heart of the project. Smooth, compact stone meets a more tactile material, marked by a continuous rhythm that recalls the texture of woven fabric. Rather than competing, the two materials complement one another, each reinforcing the qualities of the other. The form remains deliberately understated.
A geometric base supports the basin with quiet balance, allowing materiality and light to shape the character of the object. The ridged surface of the stoneware catches the light, creating subtle variations of shadow that enhance its depth and texture, while the stone introduces a sense of permanence and natural refinement.
With Tramediterra, Gumdesign explores the relationship between craftsmanship and innovation without opposing tradition and technology. Here, 3D printing is not used to create complex geometries for their own sake, but to reveal the expressive potential of the material itself, pairing the unique character of natural stone with a production process capable of generating new tactile and visual qualities.
