A New Kitchen – But With Heritage

For this kitchen remodel, designer Katie Bacon CKBR of Dallas-based Kitchen Design Concepts combined . The wife is of Vietnamese heritage, and she wanted something in the new kitchen that was made in that country. Decorative LiLi cement tiles were chosen in a color that complemented the blue quartzite countertop. “It’s so very personal to the homeowner, and it was very special that we could make that happen,” said the designer.

Once an awkward pantry was removed, Bacon worked within the original footprint of the room and reoriented the appliance layout. Since she was enlarging the island to include seating, she swapped the location of the sink and range and relocated the refrigerator to be closer to the breakfast area for easy access for early morning breakfast or after-school snacks.

With the stove now situated in a bay window, the designer wanted a low-profile vent. “Originally, we wanted the in-ceiling hood to be set in the floor joists, but they were not deep enough,” she said. Building out a box sheathed in the hand-crafted tile was the solution.

Also at the range, the Kitchen Design Concepts team recommended treating the windows with Smart Film, a peel-and-stick electric privacy film that switches from clear to satin with the click of a remote control or app. “They love it,” said Bacon. “It’s nice to get the natural light during the day but maintain privacy at night or whenever needed.”
