Designer Anabel Hering of Bethesda, Md.-based Black Salt Interiors made changes big and small in this renovation of a kitchen and scullery.

By removing the wall between the kitchen and family room, the footprint of the kitchen stayed the same while allowing the design team to enlarge the island. “We gained some space, openness and storage by doing that,” said Hering. The move allowed the spaces to feel larger and more connected, supporting both daily living and entertaining while enhancing the overall sense of scale and brightness throughout the main living area.

The homeowners do a lot of entertaining and had requested two dishwashers to better expedite post-party cleanup. Hering placed the panel-ready appliances in the island, which now measured 130 x 58. “Hiding” the dishwashers there, along with a microwave drawer, put the focus on the cohesive cabinetry along the perimeter of the kitchen.

Color inspiration played an important role in shaping the overall design direction. Hering began with inspiration imagery to establish a palette and mood, then tailored those ideas to reflect the homeowners’ personal style and the character of the space. The combination of white and light wood created a clean, warm foundation, while a deliberate pop of color in the scullery added depth and personality without overwhelming the home’s overall aesthetic.

Scullery Strategies

Again working within the existing footprint, Hering added a prep sink and beverage refrigerator to the scullery to improve the productivity and efficiency of the space. Putting the beverage fridge near the prep area enabled her to spread out the appliances in the main kitchen, which in turn created more storage there. The cooler’s placement also facilitated the work flow by separating the drink prep area from the main cooking zone. Walls were optimized for storage with both floating shelving and closed cabinets.

Hering pushed her boundaries a bit with the color palette in the scullery. “I like how the muted quality of the blue creates depth while adding a timeless character to the space,” she said. “The clients won’t get bored with it down the road.”
