Looking for a primary bathroom that offered a sense of calm and refinement, the owners of the Virginia home turned to TriVistaUSA Design + Build to create a spa-like retreat that reflected their contemporary taste and busy lifestyle. Their goals for the spa bathroom remodel included creating a more open, balanced layout with improved functionality, generous storage and elevated finishes.
The starting point – a circa 2007 design that lacked both quality and cohesion – offered ample opportunity for improvement. The cabinet layout was chaotic, with boxes of inconsistent dimensions spanning walls angled at 45 degrees. A jetted tub was situated against an exterior wall, under a composition of large double-hung and arched-top windows. The ceiling featured two different heights. Despite the expansive windows, the overall atmosphere felt plain and uninspired.
The primary design goal for the spa bathroom remodel was to create a spacious shower area while ensuring privacy for the homeowners. To achieve this, a feature wall was developed, highlighting the arch-top window in the new double-shower enclosure. Serving a dual purpose of privacy and preserving the architectural integrity of the exterior, the lower band of double-hung windows was left in place but tiled over on the inside of the wall.
The large window provides abundant natural light, which is bolstered by the use of light-colored tiles in the shower and white paint throughout the space. Adding to the light quality in the room, the vanity mirrors are back lit and also have sconces to ensure there is adequate task lighting where it’s needed.
The TriVistaUSA team cleaned up the jumble of cabinets by centralizing them on a single wall. A contemporary-style two-sink floating vanity now unifies the space. Above the vanity, a bar supports modular storage containers that can be swapped out and repositioned as needed.
