It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Lothar C. Birkenfeld, a former Poggenpohl U.S. President and CEO (1996-2009), NKBA Hall of Fame Winner and dear friend to so many in the kitchen industry. Over the course of a remarkable 60-year career, Birkenfeld leaves an indelible mark on the kitchen industry as an innovative leader, industry visionary and a remarkable legacy as a pioneer in contemporary European kitchen design who recognized the potential for the sector’s growth in the U.S. market.
Lothar Birkenfeld, CMKBD, a legend in the kitchen industry and Poggenpohl worldwide, passed away on July 4th, 2024. His extensive contributions to building European kitchen brands in the U.S. include his leadership roles at Poggenpohl U.S., Allmilmӧ and Alno. In 2007, Birkenfeld was inducted into the prestigious Kitchen and Bath Industry Hall of Fame by The National Kitchen & Bath Association. He was one of few industry presidents with the uniquely diversified background of sales & marketing, engineering and kitchen and bath design.
Beyond his professional achievements, Lothar was known for his infectious passion, enthusiastic character, and spirit of adventure, including his Ironman spectating adventures, his 5K and half marathon competitions and love of professional motor racing. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family. Born on May 21st, 1942 in Berlin, Germany he moved to the U.S. in 1970. Lothar is survived by his wife Lucette Birkenfeld, his three children, Cristelle, Lothar Jr., and Nathalie, son-in-law Brennan, grandchild Delfina, and brother Dr. Wolfram Birkenfeld.
Birkenfeld returned from retirement in 2022 to rejoin Poggenpohl U.S. as its Director of Sales, Multi-Family Division, working until his final days. His dedication and tenacity resulted in numerous multi-unit contract wins, including the St. Regis Longboat Key residences and additional luxury properties throughout Florida. “Lothar was a true titan in the U.S. Kitchen Industry with an infectious passion and dedication to his work,” said Marcia Speer, Poggenpohl U.S. President.
