When Design Imitates Art

Published: September 16, 2024

Every few years or so, I feel like there’s a palpable shift toward a fresh new design trend. It doesn’t appear overnight; little snippets of an emerging trend show up here and there over the course of a few years before the main idea takes hold.

Social media keeps us constantly scrolling through the latest design trends. I admit, I’m guilty of it too, often justifying it as “doing research.” I explore everything – the good, the bad and the ugly in interior design. This helps me understand why people are drawn to certain styles and what they desire.

For a few years at KBIS, there’s been a lot of vibrant, colorful additions in appliances, plumbing fixtures and cabinetry. There’s also been a huge uptick in customization and personalization, as consumers feel a need to reflect their unique personalities and tastes.

The trend toward rich, vibrant or deep moody colors inspired by artists like William Morris, Cezanne and Edward Hopper represents the desire for deeper emotional connections and artistic expression. These colors bring a sense of drama, intimacy and sophistication to the space, allowing the unique individualism of the homeowner to be expressed.

It’s been a long run for the modern farmhouse trend, and it’s not quite over yet. In my opinion, it has gotten more refined over the years and has morphed into a softer, less modern look with textured, artful touches added.

The recent trend toward wood kitchen cabinetry is fueled by a desire for warmth, versatility, sustainability and personalization. This trend blends contemporary design with the natural beauty and durability of wood. Wood is highly customizable, allowing homeowners to choose the type of wood, grain pattern, stain and finish to create a kitchen that reflects their personal style. With the growing appreciation for craftsmanship and artisanal details, wood serves as an ideal medium for showcasing these qualities through custom cabinetry and millwork.

As designers of beautiful kitchens and baths, it’s essential that we not only design a functional space but also one that speaks to the individual’s personal style. Your professional input plays a vital role in this process and can set you apart in a competitive market.
