Horse stable, art gallery, carousel-restoration workshop – the century-old, stout-yet-airy masonry building on the Brooklyn waterfront has seen diverse uses over its hundred-plus-year existence. Now it’s housing the Space Theory Brooklyn showroom.
Space Theory’s New York showroom was previously located in SoHo, Manhattan, where it occupied an upper-level space.
“We’ve called SoHo home for nearly 20 years and plan to keep a presence in Manhattan in the long term, but Dumbo’s creative energy – and the Stable Building in particular – provides us with a unique opportunity to headquarter both Space Theory and Henrybuilt on two floors of a single amazing building,” said Scott Hudson, CEO of Henrybuilt. “Dumbo is one of the most dynamic and beautiful neighborhoods in New York City, and we’re excited to be part of this vibrant community.”
The showroom comprises three kitchens, a workspace, a closed conference room and several cozy nooks for meeting with clients. The design respected the building’s natural character and original structure. Each kitchen display is treated like a museum exhibit, highlighting the minimalist precision of the cabinetry against the raw, industrial nature of the ceilings and floors. A few interior walls were added to better approximate a layout reminiscent of residential architecture: something visitors to the showroom can relate to and feel at home in. In each vignette, the positioning of the islands was carefully considered to optimize flow and enhance the visitor experience.
Among the products on display is Opencase, a grid-based panel system that adds function and flexibility to spaces like pantries, drop zones, bar areas and backsplashes. The panels are custom fit to the space, with activation points that allow easy movement and switching out of accessories such as shelves, wine racks and rods. Also on view are the new interchangeable drawer components that mount onto the Opencase backsplash.
