To deliver the clean, modern and user-friendly space to accommodate the clients’ growing family, Manhasset, NY-based Showcase Kitchens developed a function-forward design that relied on three carefully curated cabinet finishes for its aesthetic appeal.
Located in Sands Point, NY, the 1970s era ranch-style home reflected a modernist suburban design, with a low, horizontal profile and expansive windows. The kitchen was a small eat-in space with a short peninsula separating the breakfast room from the kitchen. A wall with three arched portals stood between the kitchen and the dining room.
That wall was among the several to fall in the reworked space, which was orchestrated by Showcase Kitchens designer John Starck PKBP, ASCD. He situated the new kitchen in the spot formerly occupied by the dining room and completely revamped the appliance layout of the kitchen to ensure streamlined circulation and maximal natural light.
Asked about how the design responds to the sloped ceiling, Starck said, “We did not fight with it, and chose to keep the upper line of the cabinetry level. We felt the ceiling slope added an interesting and subtle architectural element.”
The client wanted a contemporary, neutral-toned kitchen, but looked to avoid a monochromatic appearance. Working with interior designer Annie Mandelkern, Starck tried a new cabinet source: Composit Kitchens. The Italian company uses recycled wood in its products. “We added visual texture by selecting the light oak, concrete gray and pearl white as a soothing palette that highlighted the greenery through the oversized windows,” said Starck. “Three cabinet finishes were better than one.”
