But as the homeowners had never been before through the remodeling process, designer Mark Schubert of Chicago-based Phillip Harrison Interiors was equally engaged in client education and the creative aspect of the multi-room project.
“With any multi-room or whole-home project, we always work with our clients on their overall project budget,” he said. “Once that is determined, our team allocates those funds into specific spaces.”
This client had a good starting budget, but once Schubert reviewed the line-item costs associated with their design goals, he realized it would not accommodate everything on their wish list. The decision had to be made whether to increase the original budget – or find ways to stretch the agreed-upon resources.
Schubert identified some cost-saving ideas that would preserve the overall design direction. To better afford the high-end appliances and quartz surfaces, he made specific suggestions for modestly priced lighting, seating and cabinet hardware.
In this multi-room remodel, the clients did call for changes on several occasions. Despite these detours, Schubert said the impact on his bottom line was negligible.
“We maintained our profit margins because we bill any client-initiated changes or design indecision as additional services using our standard hourly rate,” he added.
