For this kitchen remodel, Gabriel Sepulveda-Villarini, senior interior designer at San Diego-based Jackson Design and Remodeling worked completely within the 366-square-foot footprint of the room, updating its look and expanding its function.

“The interplay of wood, white and light makes the kitchen feel natural, contemporary and inviting,” said the designer. She specified quarter-sawn oak for the base cabinets and white-painted units for the walls. The uppermost cabinetry shines with LED lighting behind the glass-fronted doors. A trio of pendant fixtures above the island feature a frosted half-globe design; the open top allows light to flow out and illuminate the ceiling.

The ceiling itself plays a key role in the room’s revitalization. Sepulveda-Villarini added a cove molding that supports the transitional style of the kitchen without feeling overly ornate. It also adds architectural depth and shadow lines, visually elevates the ceiling height and ties the cabinetry and room perimeter together. The upper cabinets appear to terminate into the layered crown/cove trim, creating a more custom, built-in appearance.

One of the most striking features of this kitchen remodel is the multiple waterfall countertop edges, which give the island a sculptural, furniture-like presence. Extending the stone down all four corners creates a seamless, monolithic look that adds visual weight and sophistication while showcasing the natural movement inherent in the material.

The project was dogged by lead time challenges. These delays had the potential to impact the sequencing of trades, particularly where cabinetry, countertops, appliances and finish installations were closely tied together. The Jackson Design and Remodeling team minimized disruptions through early procurement, proactive vendor coordination and strategic scheduling adjustments that allowed construction to continue while waiting for delayed items. Continuous communication between the design, purchasing and construction teams helped maintain project momentum and reduce overall schedule impacts.
