A new interpretation of the outdoor lantern takes shape with Kimado, the collection of lighting fixtures designed by Philip Adiutori of Studio Màkia for Qu, an emerging Italian company in the technical-decorative lighting sector. A project that combines technical precision, formal purity and research into the quality of light, giving life to a versatile system designed for contemporary outdoor architecture.
Crafted from turned aluminum, Kimado stands out for its solid and refined construction, where every detail is the expression of meticulous mechanical workmanship. The fixture’s body accommodates up to three light sources, which can be installed in different positions, allowing for modulation of effects, accents and lighting levels based on the design context.
Each light source, with power up to 6 W, is compatible with a honeycomb filter for glare control, ensuring visual comfort and a precise light beam. The color temperature is configurable from 2000 K to 4000 K, offering the designer maximum freedom of expression, from warm and enveloping light to a more neutral and functional one.
The collection’s distinctive feature is the transparency effect generated by the empty space inside the lamp body: a designed void that takes center stage, visually lightening the volume and transforming light into architectural substance.
The Kimado family comprises four variants, all designed for outdoor applications and sharing a coherent and recognizable aesthetic.
Suspension
Designed for suspended installations, this version features dual light emission. The upper light source illuminates an internal reflector with a bronze finish, generating a soft, diffused light, while the lower light source, directed downward, is available with narrow, medium or wide optics to adapt to different lighting needs. Both light sources are designed for use with honeycomb filters.
Bollard
A simple and functional solution for lighting paths. The lamp body is attached to the top of a bollard of the same diameter, for a total height of 60 cm. The single light source, directed downward, ensures effective and discreet lighting for walkways and outdoor spaces.
Paletto
Available for spike or screw installation, this version features a lamp body offset from the support, creating a dynamic and light visual effect. The main light emission is directed downward, ideal for highlighting vegetation and paths. A second lower light source can also be integrated to create additional accent lighting and layering effects.
Wall
The wall version represents the most versatile version of the collection. The mounting system allows for wall misalignments of up to plus or minus 10 degrees, facilitating installation even on uneven surfaces. It offers a variety of lighting configurations: downward emission for ground lighting, upward emission for wall effects or downward emission for an elegant wall washer. The internal reflector, already present in the pendant, can also be integrated to create diffused light within the volume.
With Kimado, Qu offers a lighting system that transcends function to become a design tool: a collection capable of interacting with architecture, enhancing space and offering new compositional possibilities through light.
