Flos Nocturne Series Lighting

Made of extruded aluminum and blown borosilicate glass, the Nocturne series is an evolution of the iconic Noctambule family, designed for Flos by Konstantin Grcic in 2019. It reprises the use of blown glass and advanced LED technology while introducing a new technical approach and a pursuit of modularity at the core of its lighting design. Nocturne

The glass lamps come in two distinct shapes: a conical form with a focused spot optic for directional illumination and a half-sphere delivering a softer, diffused light. Both lamp shapes incorporate dual LED sources: a primary high-performance light (either focused or diffuse) and an ambient glow that illuminates the glass body itself, giving the transparent material a luminous, almost ethereal quality.

The identity of Nocturne is defined by the visual contrast between the ethereal refinement of glass and the overtly industrial appearance of the track-mounted technical component, resulting in a sophisticated design with a distinct character. By pairing high-performance optics with the timeless beauty of glass, the collection thoughtfully expresses both the decorative and architectural soul of the Flos universe, unlocking new possibilities across contract and residential settings.

Nocturne is available in three configurations: floor, suspension, and wall-mounted. The glass diffusers come in two shapes: conical, with an integrated LED source for directional illumination or semi-spherical for a softer, more diffused light. Compared to the previous Noctambule collection, the diffusers are more compact (300 mm in diameter for the semi-sphere; 160 mm for the cone).

Each model is built around a structural, low-voltage electrified profile in extruded aluminium, measuring 26 mm in thickness and 45 mm in width. Several lighting units can be mounted on each of the electrified sides of the profile, positioned freely at the desired height.

The upright takes inspiration from the language and aesthetics of architectural lighting tracks, yet its apparent simplicity conceals a meticulous process by Flos: the miniaturization of every component and the calibration of sections and dimensions to support the weight of cantilevered fixtures. Similarly, the entire mounting system is mechanical and has been radically simplified to enable easy assembly, disassembly and repairability.

As with the historic Noctambule collection, both glass diffusers are equipped with a die-cast aluminium element to dissipate heat from the LED source. Nocturne also features a delicate luminous ring, the aesthetic hallmark of the collection, that marks the junction between the lamp and its support arm, giving an ethereal glow to the glass body itself.
