Chad Dorsey Design, a Los Angeles and Dallas-based firm regarded for refined interiors that balance tailored style with the spirit of modern living, won two 2021 California Home + Design Awards.
Designer Dorsey and his firm join a selective list of major players in design being recognized for creative use of materials, bespoke and innovative products and the ability to forget unseen design. The latter is recognition that feels particularly timely now, as the combination of artistry, creativity, craftsmanship and customization elements that Dorsey’s firm specializes in has experienced a surge of interest among homeowners seeking fresh interior inspiration – a wave that shows no signs of slowing.
Recipients of the California Home + Design award were announced earlier this month and will have their winning projects featured in the Spring 2021 issue of California + Design magazine.
“We are honored to receive awards from a leader in the publishing industry that celebrates our mutual affinity for modern design and California,” said Dorsey. “The California Home + Design Awards have always been an earmark of success, but with 2020 being anything but a typical year and so many experiences pivoting to virtual, it’s especially significant to have our firm’s efforts recognized.”
Strike, Chad Dorsey Design’s original collection of modern and sculptural bespoke fireplaces in luxurious, hand-honed stone surfaces received the award for best New Product Design. Dorsey’s line is breaking all the rules around this familiar focal point of the home, with a distinctive use of modern lines, bold dimensions and surprising scale. The Strike collection includes seven styles, three types of stone and nine finishes with options for customization for a range of interior styles.

Additionally, the firm’s standout design of the Listening Room Bath for the 2020 San Francisco Decorator Showcase House was awarded best Powder Room Design. The winning space makes use of meaningful objects that draw viewers in with subtle details that reveal a little more of their bespoke elements each time you see them. Several custom furnishings incorporate handcrafted details, including sconces with opal glass and leather from FUSE lighting, a custom floating sink, fluted shower glass and Breccia Marble flooring.
Trained as an architect, Dorsey’s approach to every space is characterized by a fluid relationship to the architecture where proportion, light and scale are as essential. He refers to his style and philosophy as “Relaxed Luxury”—the idea of living casually with luxurious things his clients love to touch and feel, in a way that is approachable and not precious. Relaxed Luxury is understated. It nods to a level of quality and beauty that, while sometimes quiet, is notable to viewers with a discerning eye.
The annual California Home+Design Awards, presented by Axor, The Bath + Beyond, Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery, and Wolf, Sub-Zero and Cove, recognizes excellence in design for California-based design professionals in the fields of interior design, architecture, landscape architecture, garden design and product design.
