Winners of Electrolux and Interior Design Kitchen Competition Announced

Published: April 9, 2012

Electrolux recently challenged members of the architecture and design community to re-imagine a kitchen with Electrolux ICON appliances as inspiration. More than 60 architects, interior designers and students submitted their visions for kitchens for review.

This year’s entries were judged by a panel of judges that included Cindy Allen, editor-in-chief of Interior Design Magazine; Henrik Otto, senior VP of global design at Electrolux; Gregory Dufner and Daniel Heighes Wismer, of Dufner Heighes; Hayes and James Slade, of Slade Architecture; and Susan Serra, of Bornholm Kitchen.

This year’s winning concept (pictured), submitted by New York-based architect Ali Tayar, featured an ultra-modern design. Conceived as the ultimate kitchen for minimal space, his design utilized seamless, stainless-steel counters and cabinets to mirror the Electrolux ICON appliances. The final piece was a “floating island” that functioned as a sculptural insertion into the living area.

Tayar received a $20,000 cash prize, a suite of Electrolux ICON appliances valued at $15,000 and cabinetry from GD Cucine valued at $10,000. In addition, his winning kitchen design was featured in January 2012 issue of Interior Design.

“Minimalist sculpture exposes the essence, or pure identity of a subject, and our winning design turns the kitchen into a brilliant, sleek homage to that idea,” said Allen. “The clean modern lines and vertical stacks of appliances and storage create a compact, efficient workspace, proving that this kitchen is not just another pretty face!”

Second-place winner, Antonio Di Oronzo, of BluArch, was awarded $10,000 worth of Electrolux ICON appliances. Third-place winners Joel Lamere and Cynthia Gunaldi, of GLD, received $5,000 of Electrolux ICON appliances. Honorable mentions were given to Ghislaine Vinas and Jin Feng.
