Published: July 4, 2011

Villeroy & Boch announced the grand prize winner of its recent “Play with Clay” contest held during the ICFF show in New York. The contest allowed more than 50 design enthusiasts to participate in a pottery challenge to create the ‘best’ washbasin out of clay.

The designs were posted on Villeroy & Boch’s Facebook page, where they were put up to a vote. Joyce Uang of New York City, won the grand prize of a trip for two to the company’s headquarters in Mettlach, Germany. They will tour the Villeroy & Boch factory and headquarters, as well as meet with German designer Oliver Conrad, an important influence on the company’s bath and wellness product designs. Uang received the most votes for her eclectic design inspired by springtime flowers seducing one another.

“Villeroy & Boch was proud to host a contest where industry professionals could physically be a part of the ceramics design process,” said Ben Fix, marketing communications manager for the U.S. Bath and Wellness division. “Showcasing the functional yet aesthetically pleasing washbasins within a wide genre of design styles was fantastic.  We are happy to help facilitate the creativity of future designers and hope to hold other contests soon.”

The second place runner-up was a design created by Greg Wong of New York City. Wong’s inspiration came from a combination of geometry and the 1982 science fiction movie, Blade Runner. Rolexi Pinxon, an architect from Manalapan, NJ, and the third runner-up was inspired by the swirling movement of water.
