The latest iteration of the NKBA Kitchen & Bath Planning Guidelines has been published by the National Kitchen & Bath Association.
The fifth edition aligns the Guidelines with the latest standards from the International Residential Code (IRC), International Green Construction Code (IgCC), International Mechanical Code (IMC), National Building Code of Canada and CSA/ASC B652 Accessible Dwellings.
The NKBA Kitchen & Bath Planning Guidelines are a truly collaborative work, built on the shared insights and technical expertise of dedicated subject matter experts and industry consultants. Contributing industry experts for the new edition include Robin Rigby Fisher, CMKBD, CLIPP, CAPS; Corey Klassen, RID, NCIDQ, CMKBD – Copy Chief; Judith A. Neary, CMKBD; Adrean Stephenson, CKBD; Cailin M. Thelen, CMKBD and Doug Walter, AIA, CMKBD, CLIPP, CAPS. Peer review was provided by Rochelle Horne, CKBD, LEED Green Associate.
Key enhancements in the latest edition include:
– Clearer planning methodology and guidance with respect to accessible design recommendations for wheelchairs and mobility aids
– Integration of the “Center Concept” across both kitchen and bath planning chapters, formalizing the identification of activity zones, work areas and the specific tasks executed within each defined center
– An expanded “Interior Environment” Chapter to incorporate storage systems, waterproofing, wall blocking and backing requirements, as well as guidance on material performance, quality standards and sustainability in design
– Enhanced Building Systems Guidance, including power planning (especially for kitchen islands), illumination strategies, home-automation integration and ventilation requirements
