Niagara Conservation Helps Save Water This Summer

Published: July 5, 2012

Niagara Conservation is trying to make it easier for homeowners to find rebate programs for water-conserving products, such as toilets and showerheads, in their hometown.

With the rebate search tool on Niagara’s website, homeowners can click on their state to see what local rebates are being offered. The rebate finder generates a list of active rebates, which the homeowner can then click on to visit their utilities companies’ websites and choose the option that works for them.

Many utilities offer rebates on high-efficiency, WaterSense-certified toilets, as toilets account for nearly 30 percent of an average home’s indoor water consumption, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). To be WaterSense-certified by the EPA, a toilet must meet criteria for performance and efficiency and use 20 percent less water than the current federal standard. With a WaterSense-certified toilet, such as Niagara’s single-flush 0.8-gpf Stealth, homeowners can save approximately 4,000 gallons of water per year.

Additional savings can be achieved by installing water-efficient showerheads, such as the company’s Bi-Max high-efficiency showerhead, which can save up to 11,000 gallons of water per year and $231 off utility bills, and the certified Tri-Max aerator, which saves nearly 11,000 gallons of water a year and $185 off utility and water bills.

“We’re proud to introduce our new rebate tool that helps homeowners quickly find water-saving opportunities in their own backyard,” said Carl Wehmeyer, Niagara Conservation’s executive VP. “In a time of water crisis, it’s important to focus on the little things we can do to help the environment. Niagara strives to create water-saving products that allow homeowners to go green without breaking the bank.”
