Design Your Own Home Appliance

Published: January 23, 2012

Electrolux Design Lab is celebrating its 10th Anniversary by challenging international design students to design home appliances that will provide a fuller sensory experience.

Electrolux Design Lab is an annual global design competition that invites students and recent graduates of industrial design programs to compete for a six-month paid internship at an Electrolux global design center and prize money. This year the jury will also take special note of the aesthetic qualities of the appliance concept and the way textures and surface materials have been used.

The 2012 challenge asks design students to draw inspiration from professional-experience creators, including chefs, architects, interior designers and hotel designers, to design home appliances that will provide a fuller experience. “I believe the importance of our sensory perception is underestimated in a lot of today’s design,” said Henrik Otto, SVP of Global Design, Electrolux. “Too much importance is accorded to the visual. What if we could incorporate our other senses into design? Could we smell who’s calling? Or feel what’s on TV?”

From the contest participants, eight finalists will be invited to a final event in Europe in the fall of 2012 to present their concepts to a jury of designers. The deadline for entries is June 1, 2012. For details, click here.
