Wisconsin residents who recycle their old, inefficient refrigerators and freezers in 2013 will receive $50 from Focus on Energy, Wisconsin utilities’ statewide program for energy efficiency and renewable energy. The previous incentive was $30.
In addition to the $50 incentive, program participation can result in as much as $150 a year in utility bill savings. Ninety-five percent of each old refrigerator or freezer is converted into recyclable metal, glass and plastic, and hazardous materials are safely extracted and disposed of to prevent environmental damage.
“Wisconsin residents made significant energy-efficiency improvements in 2012 by recycling 13,426 outdated refrigerators and freezers,” said William S. Haas, program director for Focus on Energy. “However, we know there are many more of these inefficient appliances in basements and garages throughout the state. The increased incentive for 2013 is an extra bonus for parting ways with those clunkers, saving money and helping protect our environment.”
Refrigerators and freezers must be in working order, clean and empty, with an inside measurement between 10 and 30 cubic feet. A maximum of two units per household per calendar year will be accepted. Wisconsin residents can schedule a free pickup by calling 1-855-398-5226.
