There’s a reason people pile onto tour buses in Los Angeles hoping to see the “homes of the stars.” Celebrities’ houses are some of the most luxurious spaces, and we all just want to sneak a peek at their opulence. While tourists only get to see the outsides of the homes (never mind that many tours are less than accurate), one imagines the rooms within to be furnished with the best of the best—and the bathrooms the ultimate in spa-like bliss.
Los Angeles-based celebrity interior designer Jeff Andrews has designed spaces for such famed clients as Khloe Kardashian and Lamar Odom, America Ferrera, Ryan Seacrest, Michael C. Hall and Eleanor Mondale. Andrews’s work has been published internationally in magazines and books, and his design work has been featured on HGTV and Showtime. “The key to a luxurious bathroom is the amenities,” he said. “Thick, high-quality towels are a must, along with amazing smelling soaps and scented candles like the ones from my favorite line, Diptyque Paris. Another way to feel like a celebrity is to surround yourself with high-end fixtures and lighting in unique finishes like rose gold or shiny black nickel. You can take your cabinet hardware or other accessories to a local plater and for a reasonable price, have them all custom plated to achieve a one-of-a-kind look.”
“Waterworks is my favorite go-to place for high-end bath products and accessories,” continued Andrews. “Their products are all about luxury, without the sacrifice of functional design. I just ordered their freestanding “Clothilde” bathtub in the burnished finish for one of my celebrity clients, and plan to pair it with antique nickel fixtures and fittings. They also have great accessories like shower mats, robes and bath accessories. For one recent client, I had robes, towels and even matchbooks custom embroidered to personalize their guest suite. It’s an affordable way to make anyone feel like a celebrity.”
Not only are many celebrities living in luxury, these days they are also interested in creating it. Award-winning actress and children’s book author Julianne Moore, for example, has been featured in magazines and on television talking about her passion for interior design. Moore planned the renovation of her Manhattan townhouse herself, with the result featured in World of Interiors. When renovating the home, she wanted to use materials that were integral to the original house, so Moore repeated the luxurious Carerra marble from the mantelpiece in the master bath in the bathtub. The bathroom also mixes vintage elements like old shutters with starkly modern items like the tub. Moore felt that when you use an original material, you can use it in a modern shape while still keeping to the home’s character.
“Entourage” actor Adrian Grenier is also interested in design, especially green building; His home in Los Feliz was featured on his “Alter Eco” show on the Planet Green network. Grenier enlisted the help of Los Angeles-based contractor Richard Byrd, of Byrd Development, to create the first custom-built LEED-certified Platinum home in California. Their goal for the 1920s-style Spanish manse was to incorporate many cutting-edge green features, but keep the look and feel contemporary, not crunchy. The master shower, for example, has 86-percent recycled glass tiles from Ann Sacks and low-flow toilets, faucets and showerheads—including the Forté—from Kohler, while still maintaining a sleek, modern style.
Whether designed themselves or by a professional, the homes of the stars are often the ultimate in opulence.
