NCAA Coaches Face Off at LG Cooking Challenge

Published: April 26, 2011

Jay Wright, head coach of the Villanova University men’s basketball team, and Jamie Dixon, Wright’s counterpart at the University of Pittsburgh, went head to head in a cook-off at the LG kitchen at Bracket Town. The LG Coaches’ Cook-off, which took place during the NCAA Final Four weekend, was judged by chef Tim Love.

LG Electronics USA, a corporate partner of the NCAA, hosted the competition and donated $5,000 in the participating coaches’ names to Coaches vs. Cancer, a program that benefits the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches in the fight against cancer.

In the LG kitchen, Chef Love judged the coaches’ dishes and crowned Dixon, of the University of Pittsburgh Panthers, the winner.  “It feels great to be the winner of the LG Coaches’ Cook-off. It was a lot of fun and for a great cause that Jay and I are both heavily involved with,” said Dixon. “The competition was far more stressful than going up against Jay in basketball—I definitely feel more comfortable on the court! I will use this win on the recruiting trail when we go head-to-head against each other!”

With 20 minutes on the clock, the coaches were asked to prepare a grilled New York strip, grilled artichokes with a chili-mustard aioli and a Yukon gold potato puree. Both coaches were supported by a student sous-chef from the Culinary Institute LeNôtre in Houston, as they competed side-by-side in a kitchen equipped with premium LG appliances, including French door refrigerators, induction cooktops, double wall ovens and microwave ovens.
