In our latest From the Tap podcast, Magriñá talks about the ROI of wellness in design. Noting that a recent study of the $2-trillion global wellness industry by McKinsey found that consumers are conceptualizing wellness in new ways, she observes that this opens the door for designers to have deeper conversations with their clients about wellbeing at home.
She defines a significant portion the audience for this growing wellness sector as Millennials – who are at prime home-buying age. This generation is prioritizing long-term wellness and longevity over wealth, indicating their willingness to invest in design choices that support holistic wellness.
Asked about how designers should present this information to their clients and integrate it into their projects, Magriñá explains what she calls “calculable lifestyle impact.” By prioritizing spaces that reduce stress, support rest and promote connection, designers can point to tangible outcomes, like improved productivity, better sleep and overall well-being – all qualities that clients recognize as invaluable returns on their investment.
The designer points out that this enhances client trust, and nurtures a deeper, more personal designer-client relationship, often yielding referrals or repeat business.
Gala Magriñá also identifies how incorporating wellness into projects can help future-proof a design portfolio, saying, “Holistic spaces anticipate evolving client needs, while leaving room for growth, ensuring long-term relevance and value.”
She views the return on investment of wellness in design as a “natural win-win.” Prioritizing natural and sustainable materials delivers a double return – healthier, more balanced living environments for homeowners, and a reduced impact on the planet. It’s a win-win that underscores wellness as both a personal and global investment.
