To compete in today’s booming aging-in-place market, you need to be up to date on the latest industry knowledge.

That’s why NAHB Education has revamped the Certified Aging-in-Place (CAPS) designation program — starting with the all-new CAPS III: Details and Solutions for Livable Homes and Aging-in-Place. This course replaces Business Management for Building Professionals as a requirement for the designation.

“The business management class is extremely useful to anyone wanting to start a business, but we decided to focus on more practical, hands-on information,” said NAHB Master Instructor Vince Butler. “We do a case study with real-life examples, start to finish, with before-and-after pictures. We go through the how-tos for popular modifications like grab bars, elevators and lifts, and curbless showers.”

Additionally, Marketing and Communication Strategies for the Aging-in-Place Professional (CAPS I)and Design Concepts for Livable Homes and Aging-in-Place (CAPS II) have been updated to place more emphasis on concepts, products and solutions rather than client analysis and demographics. CAPS III then builds on the CAPS I and II courses (which are prerequisites).

CAPS III also explores:

• Creating comprehensive designs for aging-in-place projects
• The latest innovative and specialized products
• Design and installation for key components in aging-in-place home design
• Budget integration techniques for design and product selection
• Common missteps
• Prioritizing individual tasks relative to a project’s budget and urgency

This course is ideal for anyone from the building and remodeling, government, health or academic communities interested in helping to enhance home owners’ enjoyment and comfort in their living environments.

“The material we cover is so timely for the market because this is what the clients are demanding,” Butler said. “Boomers are asking for CAPS even before they need it. They know what they want and are looking for someone who can execute it.”

Already have your CAPS designation? CAPS III is still well worth a look.

“CAPS III ties together all three courses’ information and shows past students the latest products that medical consultants are recommending,” according to Butler.

CAPS III also provides six hours of continuing education credits for the CAPS, CGA, CGB, CGR, GMB, GMR, CSP, Master CSP, CMP and MIRM designations and six continuing education credits from the American Occupational Therapy Association and the American Institute for Architects.
